Africa Learning Route

The Learning Route in Rwanda was delivered by the SUN Civil Society Network, in partnership with SUN Alliance Rwanda and its member organisations, and Procasur Corporation. The exchange visit took place from 30th October to 5th November 2016.

CSAs from the following countries took part; Ethiopia; Kenya; Malawi; Rwanda; Sierra Leone; Nigeria; Tanzania; Uganda; Zimbabwe. Each country delegation was made up of three representatives from the CSA who were working on nutrition at national or subnational level.

The learning objectives of the Learning Route were to:

'I found the Learning Route experience amazing – it surpassed my expectations! We were able to go to the communities and see the way of life of the people, share with them what their challenges are, talk to them and find out how they are looking at the issue of malnutrition and dealing with its consequences. '

'Eat What you Grow' - Changing nutrition behaviour in Sierra Leone

Inspired by participation in SUN CSN’s Learning Route in Rwanda, SUNI-CSP Sierra Leone has changed beliefs and behaviour on nutrition in one rural community.

Vulnerable farmers in a community in northern Sierra Leone are starting to consume some of their own produce and change key nutrition habits as a result of a project inspired by SUN CSN’s learning exchange programme.

Capacity building for the media puts nutrition onto the news agenda in Ethiopia

Inspired by participation in SUN CSN’s Learning Route in Rwanda, Ethiopia’s ECSC-SUN targeted media professionals in a bid to raise the level of coverage of nutrition

Ethiopia’s media has been given a much-needed boost in terms of its interest in and awareness of nutrition issues affecting the country, following a two-day workshop organised by Ethiopian Civil Society Coalition for Scaling up Nutrition (ECSC-SUN).

Performance contracts piloted in Tanzania

Performance contracts piloted in Tanzania
Inspired by participation in SUN CSN’s Learning Route in Rwanda, Tanzania’s PANITA have successfully adapted and replicated the use of performance contracts.

An accountable district nutrition steering committee (DNSC) and performance contracts have been successfully piloted in the Kalambo district of Tanzania as a direct result of SUN CSN’s learning exchange programme. Partnership for Nutrition in Tanzania (PANITA) led the effort and are optimistic that this approach will be scaled up around the country.

SUN Civil Society Network briefing learning programmes 2016–17

The role of SUN CSN learning programmes in building civil society capacity to tackle malnutrition.
Sharing of learning within the SUN CSN network has rapidly accelerated following our two recent peer-to-peer structured learning visits: CSAs in Africa and Asia are now applying lessons they learned back in their own countries; regional coordination has been strengthened; and several CSAs are already involved in multi-country collaborative projects as a direct result.

Eat What You Grow - tackling food taboos in Sierra Leone

Koinadugu district in SIerra Leone still has one of the country’s highest rates of malnutrition, despite the fact that farmers are producing vegetables and livestock. Scaling-up Nutrition and Immunisation Civil Society Platform Sierra Leone (SUNI-CSP SL) is tackling this problem by raising awareness of the importance of consuming locally-produced food.
